Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices of Swiss or gruyère cheese
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
  • 4 hamburger buns, toasted
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Optional: 1/4 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add butter and olive oil. Stir in sliced onions, sugar, and balsamic vinegar. Cook for 20 minutes until onions are caramelized.
  2. Add garlic and thyme to the onions and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. Set aside. If the mixture becomes dry, add a splash of beef broth.
  3. Form ground beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook patties on a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side for medium-rare.
  5. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  6. Assemble the burger by placing the cooked patties on the toasted bun bottom, topping with caramelized onions, and closing with the top bun. Serve hot.
